Summer Greetings:

It's wonderful to take a moment to say hello, as I've been going non-stop for quite a while these days, consulting as a writer, on numerous film projects and books--writing film treatments, editing books, writing documentary narration, and scripts. I've also been immediately putting into form all the bright ideas that pop into my head. I just took a moment to notice how rapidly things are manifesting. It's curious how quickly things can come into being, when you are not being held down by fears.

You can also read about our September 17th, 2005 Symposium/Panel in Westwood, California, on "Creating the New Millennium Story and Film." I will be reading a brief excerpt from a new piece that I've written called, "The Magic Pen." My pen is a talisman--it is an object of power, and has a name. It guides and assists me, like King Authur’s sword, named Excalibur, which protects him. I held a vision of the pen in my mind, and the Australian artist, Wendy Slee helped bring it into form, in the image "Celeste’s Magic Pen," which you can view on the workshops page. The image of the pen contains magic writing on the side, incantations for fluidity and vision in creating and completing my newest novel. (This novel contains some of the characters, that appeared in "Keepers of the Dream.") Like the shield that a warrior carries, which can be literal or figurative, this pen can be real or imaginary, but I’ve chosen to have it take on a physical form. In native American tradition, a man would choose a brother who honored his own medicine, to make his shield. The shield might be made for the initiation of a project, and contain the design of the desired outcome on the shield. In this same tradition, my pen is currently being created by Choctaw shaman Boe Many Knives Glasschild, with a magic box to hold and recharge the pen. The image will be posted on the website in the near future.

I've started a section on this newsletter, "What's Your Question," as I've been receiving a lot of emails from around the world, from people/surfers who somehow access this website. Many ask questions. Instead of simply sending personal replies, it occurred to me that others would appreciate reading these questions and answers. So that is the origin of this new section "What's your question." Thank you to those who have written to me in the past, and who have been the inspiration for this new section of the newsletter. You are most welcome to submit a 'spiritual' question, that you're pondering and it may be posted online on this newsletter page.

My plans for my walk along the El Camino, in Northern Spain, have been delayed, until my lower back feels strong enough to carry my backpack, without going out on me, on day 15 of my walk. In my efforts to heal the aching, I've developed an excellent yoga routine and have had the blessing of studying with a wonderful teacher of Iyengar yoga. Since she is now in India for five weeks, studying with Mr. Iyengar himself, I've been maintaining my own practice, and doing other forms of exercise until she returns. In addition to wonderful evenings doing what is called, in Santa Monica, "contact dancing," I've been following the suggestions of Hira Ratan Manek (aka HRM) and have been taking long barefoot walks along the Pacific Ocean, and building up minutes of sungazing, at 10 second increments, during sunset and sunrise. (I have several sungazing friends, who are also increasing their daily level of direct sunlight intake, and it's quite exhilarating to share in an exploration of the nurturing power of the sun). Hira outlines the routine to follow, to avoid UV exposure. It's imperative to learn the specifics of the technique, so that there is no damage done to the eyes. He says he hasn't eaten in 10 years but lives on the nourishment of the sun...he also says he's been scientifically tested. (Once you've read what he says, or heard him speak, as I have, draw your own conclusions.) Being the Leo that I am, I am also a FireWalker...so it's no surprise that Sun Gazing resonates with me and is now a part of my daily routine as well. I was disappointed not to start my trek across northern Spain, but these preparations of maximizing my health and physical stamina are all part of the journey, so I've begun a new 2005 Journal page, El Camino, which describes my preparations for the journey. The path of the Lightning Dancer is the path of walking through the maze of life on manual pilot. It is the decision to respond to life instead of reacting. The purpose of Lightning Dance is to give "the white eyes with split vision the keys to dancing in the center of the circle". Although the practitioners are referred to as shamans, traditional societies shun this word. In our nation, the Choctaw Nation, the word is Holhkunna, which means shaman or native curer, (pronounced hoth-koo-nuh). White Eyes is a term that describes people seeking the natural medicine as provided by Earth Mother. Until the veil is lifted, anyone can be a white eyes, but after answering the call to Earth Maker, and walking the talk on this behalf, one is on the path to becoming a Lightning Dancer. This is one of many pathways for Spiritual evolution, and the destination is as individually unique as the journey. When one begins to operate on manual attention, the personal gifts we carry in this incarnation begin to manifest.

No two Lightning Dancers have the same medicine, attitude, or spiritual energies, but all aspire to be an instrument of healing in their relative capacities. We become totally aware of the moment and create our actions that are most appropriate for the moment. Life is a relative engagement, and our physical bodies are just space suits containing the equipment we chose to attend the theatres of this life.

I am in a most unusual relationship. I am as different from my boyfriend as a tortoise is from a hare. I recognize so many of his wonderful qualities, but I don't know how to work with our different ways of seeing things. He plods along slowly and meticulously, answering a question or offering information, and I get impatient and bored with his slowness. On the other hand, he has a problem with how quickly I do things, since he finds that whatever I do is not done perfectly. How could studying Lightning Dance help me in terms of reconciling these differences and finding ways to communicate with him more productively. Are there practical uses for Lightning Dance in terms of relationships. Does Lightning Dance address how to maximize personal relationships?
